Kyoto University’s dialogue-based research assessment system
for co-creating new academic commons

- [COMON] is Kyoto University’s Way of
Co-creating New Commons.
The values long cherished in research at Kyoto University have been expressed through five perspectives, collectively named COMON from their initials.
The word commons refers to “shared ground” or “a public good.” A university, as a public good for society, is expected to generate academic value and contribute to society by fostering diverse connections with people in the wider community.
The five perspectives represented by COMON—Cumulative foundation, Originality, Maturing excellence, Outreach impact, and Network centrality—symbolize the rich diversity of research that Kyoto University has cultivated.

Cumulative foundations
A perspective that values research, whether in the sciences or the humanities, grounded in solid academic foundations, carefully accumulates knowledge while continually renewing the way we see the world.
Originality
A perspective that values research which leads academic fields forward or pioneers new domains, receiving international recognition for advancing the frontiers of knowledge.
Network centrality
A perspective that values research with a gravitational force—drawing together scholars across disciplines and borders, fostering academic networks, or creating communities that connect scholarship with wider society.
Maturing excellence
A perspective that values research whose contributions are not immediately evident, or whose significance within academia and society has not yet been recognized, yet possesses distinctive worth that unfolds over a longer horizon.
Outreach impact
A perspective that values research that influences other disciplines or society at large, generating social and economic value and contributing directly to the public good.
