Kyoto University Office of Research Acceleration held a networking event, \u201cMeet Your KU Community!\u201d, on June 22, 2026, in a hybrid format both online and in person at linkhub@ in the International Science Innovation Building. The purpose of this event is to encourage Kyoto University researchers to connect beyond the boundaries of their research fields and departments, and to build new networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this eleventh meeting, Sanjeeta Sharma Pokharel<\/a>, Program-Specific Assistant Professor at the Hakubi Center for Advanced Research \/ Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, gave a talk titled \u201cBeyond tusks and trunks: What does it feel like to be an elephant?\u201d She explained that elephants possess rich emotions similar to humans, demonstrating behaviors such as gathering around deceased companions as if holding a vigil to mourn their loss. Based on stress hormone data extracted from dung and hair, she also pointed out that elephants living in areas with human activity, such as agricultural land, suffer from high levels of chronic internal stress. Focusing on the internal suffering of elephants\u2014who are deprived of sleep due to being chased by humans and fall into a state resembling PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)\u2014the presentation led to a discussion on the future of coexistence between humans and wildlife. Additionally, she shared her personal career journey as an early career researcher. Following the presentation, participants\u2014including international students from KU-STAR as well as graduate students and early-career researchers staying at Kyoto University through the JST LOTUS program\u2014raised a succession of questions and comments. This led to a lively exchange of ideas, making the event a highly rewarding opportunity for networking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In collaboration with the Early-Career Researcher Development Division, this event was planned and organized by Shizuka Oki (administrative staff, International Researcher Support Team), along with URA Yu Sasaki<\/a>. The Office of Research Acceleration will continue to support our researchers, helping to nurture richer and more vibrant connections across the KU community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
