ORCID iD (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier) is a free, unique, persistent, international identifier issued by the not-for-profit organization ORCID.
Find out the key benefits of using ORCID, learn how you can streamline the organization of your research activities and outputs by linking your ORCID iD with other tools.
Why Use ORCID?
Having an ORCID iD enables you to:
- Distinguish yourself from other researchers with a similar or identical name
- Ensure correct attribution for all your research activities and outputs
- Create a centralized list of all of your work from publications and datasets to conference presentations and peer review activities
- Increase discoverability of your research worldwide
- Control visibility & accessibility of your record
- Save time by automatically importing/exporting data between authorized integrated systems
- Meet requirements from a growing body of scholarly publishers, funders and other organizations that utilize ORCID in their processes
- Continue building your record despite changes in name, affiliation, country, etc.
Register for an ORCID iD on ORCID’s website.
To make the most of your ORCID iD, we recommend taking the following steps after registration.
Step1. Link your ORCID iD with Web of Science
Web of Science (WoS) is a comprehensive and bibliometric database provided by Clarivate that enables you to raise the visibility of your research to your peers and funders, track connections between articles, identify impactful and suitable journals for article submission, obtain bibliometric indices, and more.
By linking your ORCID iD with your WoS profile and enabling two-way synchronization, you can automatically update your researcher profiles and information on both systems.
If you have not created a WoS researcher profile, you can find instructions on how to do so on the Web of Science website.
If you already have a researcher profile, you can connect it with your ORCID account via “ORCID Syncing” tab in your researcher profile settings. For instructions, see Clarivate’s Web of Science Help.
Step2. Authenticate your ORCID iD with Kyoto University
You can enhance the credibility of your ORCID record by connecting your ORCID iD to Kyoto University’s systems via RIS-ORCID (ORCID Profile Connection System).
Step3. Link your ORCID iD with researchmap
researchmap, provided by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), is the standard researcher database in Japan. It serves as a platform for researchers in Japan to showcase their research outputs and activities, and for evaluating research capabilities in government funding applications in Japan, such as KAKENHI (Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research).
JST is an ORCID member organization since 2013. and it enables you to connect your researchmap ID to an ORCID iD. By connecting your ORCID iD with your researchmap account, you can:
- Easily import information from your ORCID record to researchmap
- Import information from Web of Science to researchmap via ORCID
- Add a link to your ORCID profile on your researchmap profile
In addition, connecting your ORCID iD to researchmap ensures that your researcher profile on Kyoto University’s Activity Database on Education and Research will be automatically kept up to date.
Video recordings and handouts from KURA’s seminars on how to effectively use ORCID and Web of Science are available HERE (all materials are in Japanese only).
