Mentoring Seminar with a UCSF Professor

Date

Wednesday, October 28, 2026, 16:00–18:00

Venue

Kyoto University is currently preparing for the transition from the traditional laboratory-based system to a department-based structure. While this transition is expected to provide researchers with greater independence, it also highlights the need for more structured mentoring, as opportunities for informal guidance and career support that have traditionally developed within individual laboratories may become less common.

In response to these changes, KURA is promoting the development of mentoring systems as part of its Faculty Development (FD) initiatives to support early-career and newly appointed faculty members in building successful and sustainable academic careers.

As an important first step in this effort, we are honored to welcome Dr. Mitchell D. Feldman from UCSF, who played a leading role in establishing one of the earliest comprehensive faculty mentoring programs in the United States. In this seminar, he will introduce the fundamentals of mentoring, including its purpose, core principles, and practical approaches to building effective mentoring relationships.

We hope this seminar will help both mentors and mentees deepen their understanding of mentoring and apply what they learn to build more meaningful and productive mentoring relationships.

*Although this seminar is registered as a FD Program of the Graduate School of Medicine, the content is intended for a broad audience and is not limited to the medical field. It focuses on the general principles and practices of mentoring that are relevant across disciplines. We warmly welcome participants from all academic fields and professional backgrounds.

*As a special opportunity, we will also offer One-on-One Sessions with Dr. Feldman. Please see the details below.
